Manchester United has finalized the signing of Real Madrid center-back Raphael Varane on a four-year contract. On July 26, a cost of £34 million was agreed upon for the France international, which may increase to £42 million with add-ons.
During his 10-year tenure with Real Madrid, the 28-year-old earned three La Liga crowns and four Champions League trophies.
“Manchester United is one of the most iconic clubs in the world,” World Cup champion Varane remarked.
“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to come here and play in the Premier League.
“There is a lot more I want to achieve in my career, and I know I’m joining a group full of quality players who are all driven to win games and trophies.
“After speaking with the management, I can see how far we’ve come in the previous few seasons, and I now join a club that is ready to compete at the top level.
“I want to create an impression here, and I will do all in my power to become a part of this club’s storied history.”
Varane began his career with the French national team.
He has 79 international caps and appeared in all four of France’s Euro 2020 games this summer, where they were ousted in the final 16.
Varane, whose contract at Real Madrid was set to expire next summer, has long been a United fan.
Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson first pursued a deal for the defender prior to his departure to Real Madrid, while Jose Mourinho was also interested in signing the defender during his tenure at Old Trafford.
“We have a fantastic depth of international defenders, and he will add to that group with his enormous skill set and leadership. He is a one-of-a-kind defender with a rare blend of elite qualities that I am confident will rub off on our younger players.
“I am very happy that we have managed to get one of the finest defenders in the world over the last ten years,” United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said.
“Raphael is a proven winner whom we have followed for a long time, and we know what a committed professional he is.
“He has already won all there is to win, yet I know he is still driven to achieve. I can’t wait to have him on the team.” Varane is United’s third acquisition of the summer, following the £73 million signings of England winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and the re-signing of goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
