The palace confirms that Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96. At the age of 27, the queen ascended to the throne in 1953. She was the world’s second-longest-serving sovereign and spent her entire life in the spotlight.

For many people in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, she represented stability as the twentieth and twenty-first centuries changed. When she died, her eldest son and heir to the throne, Prince Charles, ascended to the throne immediately.

“The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen,” the new king said in a statement released by Buckingham Palace.

On Wednesday, the queen postponed a virtual meeting with Privy Council advisors on doctors’ advice to rest, according to reports. The palace said Thursday at 7:30 a.m. ET that the queen’s doctors were “concerned” about her health and recommended she remain under medical supervision at Balmoral, the family estate in Scotland. This April, Queen Elizabeth II turned 96.

The nation celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne, in June. She was the last woman standing in the line of succession for future generations. Following Charles is Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, Charles’ son with Princess Diana. Prince George, Prince William’s son with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is next.

Prince Philip, the monarch’s husband, died in 2021 at the age of 99. They had been married for more than 73 years. Here are the most recent live updates on the queen’s death and what will happen next.
